My Uncle died today. Edward J. Mathis Sr. was 86 years young. I will miss him greatly. You see, I grew up without a father. I am sure Phyllis and Eddie Jr. know how lucky they have been.

Yes, there were father figures in my life – very good ones, too. My grandfather, Milo J. Mathis Sr., was. Also, there was Mr. Grimes in our neighborhood when I was a child. Uncle Eddie was there and Uncle Milo too, when I was growing up.

As time passes and life happens, I sort of lost track of Uncle Eddie. He and Aunt Jean moved their family to Alabama. I went into the military and eventually landed in Arizona.

I reconnected with Uncle Eddie after many years when I decided to buy some software and create a family tree. I am so glad I did. Uncle Eddie, or the Internet King as we call him, was always corresponding with me via computer. Most days I received a dozen messages on every topic imaginable. We shared stories, photos, and many laughs.

Those that really knew Uncle Eddie, if asked, would likely talk first about how funny he could be. Aunt Jean was no doubt his perfect partner. The contrast of his deep clever wit against her non-stop caring and efficiency could not be better scripted.

I created a DVD for their 60th Anniversary from old family photos. Many of the photos are now priceless to me. There is one of Uncle Eddie in the highest, smallest branches of a tree as a youngster. There is one of him in his Army uniform – holding a duck. But certainly one of my favorites shows Uncle Eddie with his parents and brother and sister on the front porch.

He was the last of them to pass. I miss them all. And I already miss him greatly.

We are so sorry to hear of Eddie''''s passing. We will miss him at our monthly Redstone Luncheons and in our everyday lives. You and he were such a blessing to us all and seemed the perfect match. Our thoughts and prayers are with you , today as you say your farewell, and in the comming days ahead as you adjust to live without him. Please know that if there is anything we can do for you, you have only to ask. God bless you and your family is our prayer.
