Arvin Malcom Briscoe, Jr.

August 30, 1935 ~ March 21, 2018 (age 82)

Funeral services for Arvin Malcom Briscoe, Jr., age 82, of Decatur, will be Saturday, March 24, 2018, 3:00 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Blake Kersey and Mr. Ray Solley officiating.    The family will receive friends for two hours prior to service in the chapel.  Interment will be in Ryan Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Briscoe, who died Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at Decatur Morgan Hospital, was born August 30, 1935, in Blount County to Arvin Malcom Briscoe, Sr. and Daisy Shelton Briscoe.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Briscoe was a Master Sergeant in the Green Berets, and served for 21 years with the 82nd Airborne Division and the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 10th, and 77th Special Forces Groups.  He was an Airborne Instructor and Rigger who trained cadets and founded the Skydiving Competition Team at West Point Military Academy, served three tours in Vietnam, and was awarded multiple medals, including the Bronze and Silver Stars.  After retiring from the Army, he and his wife owned and operated Briscoe Steel Erectors.  He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Alabama Special Forces Chapter 92, and enjoyed many hobbies, including camping and restoring antique vehicles.

He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Latham Briscoe of Decatur; one daughter, Deborah House (Tom) of Athens; one brother, James Briscoe (Nedra) of Gastonia, NC; two sisters, Joan Humphries of Hulaco, and Linda Solley (Ray) of Decatur; two grandchildren, Virginia Hathcock (Myles) of Woodridge, IL, and Tommy House (Caitlin) of Pensacola, FL; four great-granddaughters, Caroline and Amelia Hathcock, and Hadley and Piper House; and several nephews and nieces.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Decatur Morgan Hospital ICU for their kindness and compassionate care of Mr. Briscoe.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.
